When the lighting isn’t ideal: a comparison of HDR techniques

Sometimes the sun is glaring, sometimes a detail is lost in the shadows: challenging lighting conditions are common challenges for many machine vision applications. HDR (High Dynamic Range) helps capture additional image information, and makes details in very bright and very dark areas of the image usable. The goal here is not to produce images that are as visually appealing as possible to the human eye, but to maximize the amount of image information available for reliable machine analysis. However, this data can only be utilized in suitable HDR and display formats.

There are several approaches to achieve this: IDS offers solutions such as Clear HDR, Quad HDR and Sequence HDR. But which method is best fit to which use case? Our latest video on the Vision Channel compares the methods and explains the fundamentals of HDR imaging, tone mapping and display techniques, using examples from transport, welding, logistics and microscopy.

Rob Webb will demonstrate how HDR images are transformed into data for industrial image processing during the Vision Channel Live event on September 22. Using specific examples, Rob will walk through the complete workflow with IDS cameras and IDS peak. You’ll learn which data is suitable for analysis and which is optimized for visualization.
