IDS case study: AI-powered potato sorting

Potato harvest: Agritech startup automates quality inspection and sorting

Rising quality requirements, increasing cost pressure, and ongoing labor shortages are driving the need for more efficient sorting processes in agriculture. For Munich-based agritech startup Karevo GmbH, these challenges inspired the development of a smarter approach to potato and onion sorting. With its AI-powered DUO85 sorting system, the company automates quality inspection and makes advanced machine vision economically viable for family farms and direct marketers.

The system utilizes between two and eight IDS uEye FA GigE Vision cameras. Capturing every potato from all angles, the cameras provide a complete 360° view of the surface. AI algorithms then analyze size, shape, and surface defects in real time, while the robust camera design ensures reliable operation in demanding agricultural environments.

The result is consistent sorting quality, reduced manual labor and throughput rates of up to five tons per hour. Farmers benefit from stable product quality and more efficient harvesting operations.
